Like most great love stories, theirs began with absolutely no intention of falling in love. Savannah and Gino met in an improv comedy troupe, a place where people pretend to be pirates, dentists, or haunted furniture for fun. In other words, a completely normal place to meet the person you might someday marry. At first, neither of them thought much of the other. Just two funny people existing in the same orbit. But as any good park ranger will tell you, the most interesting trails don’t always look like much at the trailhead. For about a year they were just friends. Then came a cabin trip with friends where, according to Gino, Savannah “came into focus.” Shortly after that, Savannah realized something suspicious was happening. They were… flirting. There was a party at Savannah’s house where Gino stayed far later than everyone else but somehow still didn’t kiss her — an act of restraint that will remain one of the great mysteries of their relationship. Weeks later, after a friend’s birthday party, Gino offered to drive Savannah home. Sitting in the driveway, Savannah decided to skip the subtlety. “Are we flirting?” she asked. “Yes,” he said. “Should we just make out?” “Yes,” he said again. And just like that, the trail officially began. Because they shared a lot of mutual friends, Savannah and Gino quietly started seeing each other in secret — a low-key romantic subplot unfolding between improv rehearsals and birthday parties. Eventually the secret became less important than the fact that they had become something much bigger than expected. In their partnership, Savannah is the lantern — curious, warm, and always lighting the way toward the next adventure. Gino is the ranger — steady, thoughtful, and the one who somehow keeps everything on the trail. Savannah follows ideas. Gino makes the map. Together, they somehow always end up exactly where they’re supposed to be. Along the way there were arcade games, a four-month hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, and the quiet realization that the thing they had built together was starting to look a lot like forever. For Savannah, it became real when Gino moved in. For Gino, it became real when Savannah left for the PCT — and he realized the trail still led back to her. Years after their first date at the zoo, Gino brought Savannah back there. Standing in front of the meerkats — perhaps the most observant witnesses available — he surprised her with a proposal. She said yes. And so, like any great national park, their story was officially established. Welcome to Lantern Falls National Park — a place built on laughter, curiosity, and the occasional loose rock ahead. Population: two people who discovered they were better together than apart.
