After they graduated from high school, Grayson and Michaela finally admitted that they liked each other as more than just friends. This came after spending weeks running together every day training for a 5k mud-run. If you know Grayson, you can see how clearly this was a ploy to gain Michaela's love and affection not at all about the running.
Michaela and Grayson decided things were getting too serious as they were headed off to different colleges far from home, so logically the best way to distance in a modern era was through letter writing (definitely not romantic). This is when they told themselves that they weren't dating.
Michaela and Grayson admit that they're dating.
Clearly hours apart in different states wasn't far enough, so Grayson moved to Los Angeles, California for an internship while Michaela went off to study abroad in Cork, Ireland. Miles were one thing, but time zones were a whole other animal that they had to learn how to cope with.
Grayson couldn't take the distance anymore, so he flew from Los Angeles to Cork to spend a week exploring in Ireland with Michaela.
Somehow Grayson convinced Michaela to drive across country in a 35 year old Jetta full of tools using only paper maps, all with no predetermined lodging plans. Miraculously, they ended the trip with no breakdowns, only two small arguments, and more in love than ever - albeit with some sore backs (those 35 year old seats aren't exactly the most supportive),
A cross country road trip in the summer wasn't enough of a test, so Michaela and Grayson took the return trip in the middle of winter. Racing snowstorms isn't the easiest when the lights on your car stop working and you have to make a pit stop to wire your lights together, in the dark, at a sketchy gas station in Memphis.
Grayson moved across the country to start adult life as a mechanical engineer for SpaceX while Michaela stayed in Virginia for Undergrad 2.0 to get her second bachelor's degree, this time in nursing.
After over 20 solo flights and 100 hours alone in the car trying to get to each other, Michaela and Grayson finally ended up in the same time zone, the same state, the same city, and under the same roof. Grayson is still a mechanical engineer working for SpaceX and sending American astronauts back to space, and Michaela is a Labor and Delivery nurse helping to bring babies into the world.
After a wonderful weekend of wine tasting, ostrich feeding, road tripping, and seemingly opportune moments, Michaela had given up hope that Grayson was going to ask her to marry him that weekend. Little did she know Grayson was just working up the courage and wanted their special moment to be a little closer to home so they could go back there anytime. After a long drive back from Solvang, CA, they stopped to grab some sandwiches from their favorite deli and set off for a picnic at the beach in Pelican Cove, Palos Verdes. After about an hour of looking for juuuuust the right jagged rock to kneel on, Grayson decided that sitting hand-in-hand on the 'comfy' rock would have to do. Grayson finally stopped being weird about everything that was happening, he finally worked up the courage to ask - and she said Yes!
Grayson and Michaela decided that planning a wedding, dealing with Covid-19, and having Michaela switch to night shift wasn't enough to deal with at once, so they got a puppy! Welcome, Willow Twigg!
