How We Met

A girl walks into a bar

During the year Sarah took off between her undergraduate and her master's, she enjoyed visiting a bar downtown with her friends for drinks and dancing. Steven was finishing up school and working as a bouncer at the time and remembers her coming in and trying to be the one to get to take her ID in line. He would watch her dance, and make sure no one was bothering her, and later told her he knew right away that there was something different about her, something special. She also kept her eye on him, and thought there was something "real" about that cute guy. Months went by and there were occasional "hellos" as friendly faces. One night, Steven was now behind the bar as a bartender, Sarah turned to her friend Kallie and told her how big of a crush she had on this guy. Kallie made Sarah march right up to the bar to try and talk to him. He was busy, so they bought a drink from another bartender, two shots of tequila. Anyone who has known Sarah a while knows that tequila has not always been her friend. She kindly took the drink, but made a terrible face and tried to keep it down. Of course, this is the moment Steven finally looks over at her. Embarrassed, she went on about her evening with her friends. Later on, she decided to be about as "brave" as we all are these days with social media at our fingertips, and to finally reach out to him officially for the first time. She had no idea what to say to such a cute guy, especially one she thought could be the real deal. All she could come up with was, "I think you saw me at my worst moment.." The next day she woke up to a message wondering if she'd like to go on a date sometime. In the weeks to come they didn't spend much time apart, from hiking to dog parks to cafes, it didn't take long to know they had found "it."

The Proposal

Cottage in the Woods

It was the weekend of Sarah's birthday, and they had both casually discussed options of how to celebrate. This year, she tried to let him take lead on the planning. It was the start of the week, and Steven started talking about finding a forest service cabin somewhere to stay with the dogs for the weekend. He was worried that this plan wouldn't be quite what Sarah was hoping for for her birthday celebration, as she usually likes to just relax. The end of the week came, and he told her he had it figured out, but that it was a surprise. After work, they loaded up the dogs, Sarah packed a few things (thinking they were going to be somewhat roughing it), and he already had the rest all ready to go. They got on the road, Sarah really had no clue where they are going, but assumed it was the forest service cabin they had discussed. She then realizes she hasn't brought things for this kind of trip, for example TP! He just laughs and tells her they will be fine. They finally arrive at this amazing cabin with a river running through the property. It was the perfect scenery for a relaxing weekend away from civilization, and the cabin was beautiful and stocked with anything and everything they could possibly need. They spent the weekend hiking, exploring with the dogs, laughing as Sarah learned to chop wood with an axe for the first time, talking and enjoying each others uninterrupted company. At night, sitting by the fire making smore's and talking about the future, Sarah started to know something was up, because for the first time ever, Steven finally agreed to the farm full of animals she hoped to have someday (he NEVER agrees to this) he said the most incredible words, got out of his chair, turned toward her and knelt with both dogs on either side of him (it was like they knew!) and asked her to marry him. She later found out he actually intended on asking the next day in Bozeman, but he said it just felt like the perfect day and moment, and he was absolutely right.
