If you're unable to join us for a walk in Armstrong Redwoods on Thursday, we strongly recommend you make time to visit Armstrong Redwoods on your own. It's an ancient Redwood grove filled with sky-scraper-like trees, many of which have been around for over a thousand years.
A trip to Healdsburg wouldn't be complete without wine tasting. If you're looking for something quick and easy, check out one of the many tasting rooms located off Healdsburg Town Square. Or if you're looking for the full experience, make a reservation at one of these well-regarded local wineries: DaVero Farms and Winery (located across the street from Madrona Manor), Jordan Vineyard and Winery, Dry Creek Vineyard, Bella Vineyards, Seghesio Family Vineyards, or Medlock Ames. Keep in mind these wineries require reservations made in advance!
For a coastal drive with breathtaking views, take Highway 116 out towards the coast (optional stop at Armstrong Redwoods along the way) then turn south on Highway 1. Drive along the Sonoma Coast to Bodega Bay, either returning to Santa Rosa via Bodega Highway or continuing on Highway 1 down to Tomales Bay, turning inland at Point Reyes. (If you make it this far, be sure to stop for oysters at the Marshall Store on Tomales Bay!)
Given the record rainfall we've had this year, the Russian River should still be good for swimming and maybe tubing and canoeing in early October. In Healdsburg, the most popular swimming area is at the Veteran's Memorial Beach, which has a lawn, barbecues, and restroom facilities. However, if you're looking for something a little more off the beaten path, check out the swimming hole at the end of Redwood Drive off North Fitch Mountain Road. Or, if you happen to be staying in Guerneville, be sure to stop by Johnson's beach.
Healdsburg has too many great food options to list them all, but here's a few of our favorites: Best Restaurant: Barn Diva Best Cheap Breakfast: Flakey Cream & Do-Nuts Coffee Shop (don't be fooled by the name, this is a killer diner with a wide range of options, a total gem) Best Burger: The Madrona Burger at Madrona Manor (seriously, it's incredible) Best Sandwich: Oakville Grocery Best Ice Cream: Noble Folk Ice Cream & Pie Bar Best Coffee: Flying Goat Coffee
For an easy hike on the outskirts of town, check out Healdsburg Ridge Open Space Preserve. Or if you're looking for something a bit more strenuous and out in nature, try Austin Creek State Recreation area (pictured above), which is adjacent to Armstrong Redwoods.
