Here’s the story about how Troy completely surprised Libby by pulling off an amazing sunset Hawaii picnic proposal after they barely made their standby flights... We initially planned to find a warm locale to bring in the new year. We decided that it might be easier to non-rev (standby flying) after the new year and Libby had never been to Hawaii so we decided to travel there. Leading up to the trip I’d researched proposals in Hawaii on the soon to be gone Tik Tok (RIP) and had a plan in place. Leading up to the flight to San Fran (which connects to Maui) the seats available kept dwindling. Libby had a less than positive feeling that we were actually going to go & had told a few friends “we’ll probably just end up staying in ATL.” A smarter man would’ve bought tickets since I had a proposal planned & booked but I’m also a seasoned non-rev flyer & I knew all we needed was one open seat for her because I can ride in the flight deck if all passenger seats are taken. Fast forward…we made the flight. Libby’s excitement grew once we touched down in Maui but she was completely unaware that I had orchestrated something special for her. After a day on the beach & relaxing I told her that I’d planned us a picnic & then dinner for the next day. She was actually more excited about the Lu’au we were scheduled to attend a few days later. The morning of the proposal picnic, my lovely bride to be still had no inkling of my plans and even cracked jokes about me taking my time proposing (we’d been dating about 11 months lol). She said that I was going to ‘meander’ for 2 years or so before asking and that she guesses she’ll be my wide receiver since I told her a few months back that she has to let me quarterback this portion of our relationship so that’d it’d be special & romantic (Libby is a planner). I found these jokes hilarious because I knew what was coming in about 3-4 hrs, haha. So we’re getting dressed, I have a ring box poking out in my pocket that she didn’t notice...she gets dressed and does her hair & make up but I give her no incentive to look extra good because she’s always beautiful. We get to the picnic area and the guide tells us she’s going to give us a tour of the property before the picnic, Libby is wearing a heel so I’m certain she didn’t really want to walk around the property. Luckily we turn the bend that leads out to a seaside cliff with the Pacific Ocean in the background and on the lovely green meadow are the huge ‘Marry Me’ letters. She is initially confused and then emotional and then elated. I get on one knee and she says yes. The pictures do it no justice. It was quite perfect…it was beautiful and intimately just us sharing our moment in the setting sun.
