Travel Note
The nearest airport options include: Florence (~30 min drive), Pisa (~37 min drive), Bologna (~1 hr 30 min drive) and Rome (~3 hr drive, or 1 hr 30 min train). Florence airport is very small with limited daily flights and is often more expensive. Pisa, Rome, and Bologna are larger international airports and therefore have more flight options and generally lower fares. Buses, trains, and taxis are available from all airports to get you to the city of Florence.

Travel Note
Hiring (renting) a car is a great way to get around Italy. If you are hiring a car, we would advise you make a reservation in advance to get the best prices (be aware most prices you see on rental websites won't include insurance, as these are usually added at pick-up). There are many car rental options available at the airports. Car Hire Tip: please check with your credit card company and existing auto insurance provider to find out if they cover rental cars in Italy. Many don't, or will require supplemental insurance to protect you. If coverage isn't available, it's encouraged you purchase insurance from the rental agency in Italy to ensure proper coverage. Additionally, an international drivers license is required to drive in Italy. During your stay, we recommend you download one of the taxi apps. This is the easiest way to call a taxi in and around Florence. IT Taxi Appor App Taxi allow you to enter your credit card information, call a car, and pay directly through the app. Simply put in your address, and a taxi will come as soon as possible (like Uber or Lyft). Plan ahead for late-night requests. If you are planning an airport transfer late at night or early in the morning, you should order the taxi pickup ahead of time! Even if you need to book it ahead during the day, it is always easier to pre-book to ensure your ride shows up timely. Don’t flag a taxi. In Florence, taxis will not stop when flagged down. If you cannot text, book with an app, or call for a taxi, there are designated taxi stands throughout the city. Look for the bright orange “TAXI” signs found at popular locations like the Duomo, Santa Maria Novella train station, Santa Croce, or at the airport. There are other taxi stands throughout the city as well. If there's a group of you traveling together it might be worthwhile pre-booking a large taxi/car service to save money.
Train
If you'd prefer something other than a bus or car, the fast and comfortable trains to/from Florence are a great option. It's only 90 minutes to Rome, two hours to Venice and less than three hours to Naples. A Eurail Rail Pass is an easy and cost effective way to get from city to city, even country to country (this is our favorite way to see Italy and all of Europe). They also provide a free app to plan your train travels and book seats.
