We chose this area because it feels like summer should — long lake days, quiet mornings, and sunsets that make you want to stay a little longer. If you’re making a weekend (or mini vacation) out of it, here are a few of our favorite ways to soak it in.
Otsego Lake – Easy & Close Just minutes from downtown Gaylord. Rent kayaks or paddleboards. Pack a picnic. Take a slow swim. Catch sunset over the water. This is the “no agenda, just summer” option. Torch Lake – If You Want the Iconic Northern Michigan Blue About 45 minutes away — and absolutely worth it. Famous crystal-clear turquoise water. Sandbar hangouts and Boat rentals nearby. If you want a Pure Michigan lake day, this is it.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore About an hour west of Gaylord. Epic Lake Michigan overlooks. Short scenic drives or longer hikes. Unreal golden hour views. Perfect if you want a “wow” moment without rushing. Petoskey – Lake Michigan Charm About 45 minutes north. Walkable downtown. Lake Michigan beach access. Hunt for Petoskey stones. Sunset over Little Traverse Bay. Its peaceful and classic Northern Michigan.
Traverse City Guests coming through Cherry Capital Airport may want to turn the weekend into a mini getaway in the beautiful Traverse City. Walk the downtown on Front Street. Visit wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. Swim in Grand Traverse Bay. Catch sunset on the water. Traverse City has the perfect mix of relaxed + refined.
Frankenmuth If you’re driving up from the Detroit area, consider a stop in Frankenmuth for Bavarian-style charm, the River walk, and a Fun family stop. Notable spots are the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland. Wyandotte This was our first date location! For those who are driving by the Detroit area, stop by for some good food and drink at Whiskeys on the Water. For the full "first date experience", take a stroll on the river walk outside. End the experience with a sweet treat at Stroh's ice cream down the street.
