The spectacular Sigiriya (Lion Rock) rock fortress was built in the 5th century AD, by King Kashyapa. It is a wonder of ancient engineering, art and culture. The palace complex at the foot of the rock still has the remains of four indoor swimming pools where the king’s 500 concubines bathed. The palace structure was built with complex water arteries in the walls that provided natural air conditioning in the hot climate.

The water levels in the lake vary during the year, sometimes revealing large areas of sand and mud, and sometimes isolating islands on the lake. This route takes you along grassy tracks, along the edge of the forest where you avoid the grazing cattle and calves. You see water birds and hovering kites as you ride across the sandy shore to where fishermen haul their catches of lake fish and the locals bathe at weekends. The return takes you along the top of the bank, looking down from the road at fertile and irrigated farmland, and passing homes, paddy fields and quiet streams. A cycle ride around the lake is 10-15km. The trip will take about 1.5 to 2 hours.
