I moved to San Antonio in 2009. I apprenticed at a recording studio and worked there for a while. Unfortunately, that didn't work out as planned and I needed to find a more steady job. In the Fall of 2010, I was hired at Best Buy for a seasonal job. I had never worked in retail in my life and my first job in retail was going to be as a cashier. I was terrified. I was introduced to my trainers and one of them was hard to miss...she was a talker. We didn't talk a whole lot while I worked there, but we had one thing in common - we liked some of the same bands. We would talk about our favorite bands, new albums that were releasing soon and which concerts we planned on going to. Again, it was a seasonal job, so Best Buy didn't keep me after the holiday season. I like to joke that Selena didn't train me very well and that's why I lost my job.
I had been working at Best Buy for over a year by the fall of 2010. As the holiday season approached we started hiring on all our seasonal employees. I was the lead cashier and was given a list of names of the people I was going to be training the next week. I looked at the list of about 5 names but for some reason only one name stood out to me. At the bottom of the list was the name "Adam". I met him the next day and I immediately was drawn to his big smile and joking personality. As days went on he started making fun of me at every little thing I did (he STILL does this). My favorite band had just released a new album right before we met and I was so shocked he was listening to it, too. Once January hit they let go of all the seasonal employees and Adam was one of them. I was so bummed because I didn't think I would see him again. I am pretty sure he was too busy staring at me instead of selling Best Buy's Black Tie Protection Plans, which is why he wasn't kept after the holidays. To my surprise after he left working there he added me on Facebook and Twitter. Eventually he slid into my DM's and asked for my number. From that moment we have texted each other every single day. After months and months of talking all day every day we finally hung out and soon after, in June 2011, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
In November 2019, I bought the ring. There were plenty of opportunities where I could pop the question. Christmas, New Year's, and Selena's birthday were all happening within a 2 week timeframe. Except, Selena told me for years that she didn't want to get engaged on a "predictable" day. I was planning to do it on a weekend after her birthday, but there was one other rule that I had to follow - her nails had to be done. The first time I planned it, she broke her nail. A couple of weeks later, she got her nails done and I was ready for attempt #2. Guess what? She broke the same nail, AGAIN. On Sunday, February 16, 2020, we went out for lunch. Nails still intact, I put the ring in my pocket and headed out. We also got ice cream at a shop at the Pearl. I figured the Pearl was a great place to propose, however, I didn't realize how PACKED The Pearl would be. We ate ice cream, walked around the water, had drinks and ate dinner, and walked around again. I had tons of chances to do it, but every single time, there were people nearby. I was a nervous wreck and was beginning to think it wasn't in the cards for that day. We went to the car, which was parked in a lot under a bridge, and once there, I stalled. I told her how much I enjoyed our day, reached in my pocket and got the ring ready. I blacked out after that, a ton of words spilled out of my mouth, I got on one knee and asked her to marry me. She yelled out an expletive, and I had to ask her if that meant yes. Luckily, it did. While getting engaged in a parking lot under a bridge wasn't the most romantic thing on Earth, it was fitting. You see, when I asked her to be my girlfriend in 2011, it was in the parking lot at my apartment complex. When one of her brothers proposed to his now-wife, it was in the parking lot at a restaurant. When her dad proposed to her mom, it was also in a parking lot. I had no idea, but what I thought was a pretty lame proposal actually fit in with the rest of her family.
