Our Love Story

~Walker says I wrote this like a basic high school girl~

Walker and I met in 2013—or 2014 according to him—but that could be because he's trying to erase the memory of walking our mountain bikes off the trail together during our freshman orientation trip. We were ultimate teammates before we were friends, and I'm sure I impressed him with my skills because shortly after our re-introduction (he swears he doesn't remember me, but does remember throwing a girl in the lake during orientation) we began our infamous banter (people can get sick of us pretty quickly). From late night cafeteria trips after practice, to tournaments or parties, we could always be heard exchanging snide remarks and smug smiles. No one said it out loud, but we became the "For Christ's sake just GET TOGETHER ALREADY" duo on the team. There was plenty that contributed to the "when will they get together" aspect of our relationship, but all good things come to those who wait. Two years later, it was our senior year: I was back from Spain and we were both single. After weeks of Thursday karaoke night's at Zaza's and flirting, Walker made the move. He walked me to the door of my building, a grueling 10 ft trek. He sat outside with me for hours after Zaza's closed, we talked (mainly I talked and he listened) and I felt the kind of butterflies that you can't ignore much longer. The next week he asked me out on a date. While we had felt completely comfortable and relaxed at Zaza's or at his apartment hanging out with friends, the date couldn't have been more awkward! I couldn’t even eat my burrito from Tacos 4 Life. We played a tournament that weekend, wore matching neon green hats, stood side by side at the after party—and it was official, we were dating (October 21, 2016). After graduation, we moved in together in November 2017 in Austin, TX. We had been dating for over a year and still hadn't said those big three words. Instead we would say things “I like you" and "I appreciate you" to each other (and often). Sure, there was the time where Walker had let it slip and then pushed me to distract from his confession; sure there was another moment when I said it on accident and then ran to the bathroom of the Qdoba to avoid the confrontation—but those don't really count. The night after our parents helped us move into our apartment, I finally said it. Since Walker had asked me out, starting our story, it only felt right that I muster up the courage and put my heart on the line. "I love you.” It wasn't out there for long before Walker scooped it up and echoed my words. They didn't seem so scary anymore. And truly, the rest is history. We kept up our banter, kept playing ultimate, and kept being each other's teammate & best friend. We moved to Spain together in 2018, teaching English and making lifelong friendships for two years (Acho pijo echo, somos Discachos!). We endured lockdown in 2020 together in our small apartment in Murcia with our roommate (wassup Amanda!). We came back to the US in June 2020 and adopted our dog Raava in August. We spent a year in Dallas before moving to New York City to take our next steps and enter graduate programs. Having lived in a few places together, we are confident there's nowhere we could go and not feel at home. With each other and our three magic words, we are ready to start the next chapter of our lives.
