South Fork lies at the southern start of the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, which goes north to Gunnison. CO-149 is one of the prettiest byways in the state, full of national forests and old mining relics.
The town sits right at the entry point for the Rio Grande National Forest. There are over 60 miles of hiking trails easily accessible from there.
