We both couldn't tell you the first time we actually met, but it was sometime during the first week of Toni's freshman year at Penn State. We became friends through Schreyer Student Council, where Nick was the President and Toni was the Treasurer. After being friends for a few years, Toni asked Nick to grab drinks, as friends. Nick showed up to Local Whiskey dressed up and wearing lucky socks, while Toni was in a sweatshirt and had just finished an exam. Nick paid for the drinks, making Toni wonder if this was a date or if he was just being nice. After a few nights of this uncertainty between friends and something more, Nick asked Toni "so how'd we get here" and Toni responded with a sarcastic answer about walking from their friends apartment to her porch. That conversation ended with a planned, official first date. Four and a half years later, Toni was visiting Philly for her sister-in-law's PhD graduation. She was planning to get dinner with her friends on Friday of that week and drive back to Pittsburgh on Saturday, after stopping in State College to visit her friend Autumn and her twin sons. Toni had no idea that Nick had planned for months to propose in State College surrounded by their families. However, Toni had other plans. On Wednesday of that week, Toni started feeling unwell. By Saturday morning, there was no way she could drive out to State College to meet Autumn. But she was feeling well enough to go to the pool with her brother, sister-in-law, and niece. And when she came back, her dad led her into their backyard giving one of his famous "garden tours" to show off his lavender. As she walked into the backyard, she was greeted by their families with handwritten notes and roses, leading up to Nick where he would propose. After his meticulously planned proposal, complete with a google doc and agenda, fell through, Nick and his family drove across the state to pull together the perfect proposal, leading to Toni saying "of course I will."
