How They Met

Truly Love at First Sight

Ethan and Toni met through two biological/spiritual sisters - Beverly Reese and Cynthia Perry - who are from North Carolina. At the time, Ethan lived in Texas, while Toni was traveling throughout North Carolina for work. Both single and patiently waiting for the right person, Ethan and Toni were introduced on a random Thursday evening. They swiftly hit it off communicating by phone, Facetime, and joining each other’s Zoom meetings. After talking for several hours on Facetime each night, they knew their meeting was a blessing from Jehovah. “When I first met Toni, her smile was so beautiful,” said Ethan. “When I first saw that smile, I just knew.” Ethan believes a person’s smile tells you how happy they are. “I know Toni gets tired of me telling her how much I love her smile, but I told her that she will hear this for the rest of our lives." Ethan said all the hours they spent on Facetime were nothing short of enjoyable. “She laughs at my stale jokes. She listens when I sing to her,” he said. Ethan knows he is likely to lose in a game of Uno against Toni. “She is really good at Uno,” he said. Ethan also said Toni always gave him a new perspective during conversations when studying the Watchtower together. “When Toni came to Dallas to see me, it was the best week of my life,” said Ethan. He often reflects on how well she connected with his spiritual friends at the Kingdom Hall. “Being around Toni is always a blessing.” When the time came for Toni to go back to North Carolina, Ethan was devastated. “It was the worst feeling a person in love could go through,” he said. At a time when he needed Jehovah, there was a scripture that gave him comfort; Proverbs 13:12 - “Expectation postponed makes the heart sick, but a desire realized is a tree of life.” Toni flew to Dallas to begin their courtship and Ethan described it as the best gift he could ever receive. With their new journey, he said, “we can give thanks to Jehovah for allowing our relationship to continue, while growing spiritually stronger with one another.” Toni vividly remembers her first Facetime call with Ethan. “I knew right away,” she said. “Ethan’s demeanor grabbed my attention. From his glasses and his smile, to his laugh and his shyness. I was swept away.” Toni described Ethan’s personality as a loving old soul. As soon as they hung up for the first time, she ran to tell her grandmother, who was waiting to hear all about their conversation. “He was so sweet and geeky,” Toni explained. When Toni and Ethan began talking, he told her how the BBQ in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri was highly regarded. Toni told him she heard about a restaurant called Q69, but she wasn’t sure if that was the proper name. “I believe I know which restaurant you’re talking about,” said Ethan. Toni was confident that he knew the name of the restaurant, but he chose not to correct her. “He chose humility at that moment and did not point out that I was wrong,” said Toni. “Saving a correction for something of more value.” All she could do was smile. “I knew at that moment he was going to be it. I knew that he was what I wanted and needed in a head.” As Ethan and Toni grew to know each other, they realized they had similar upbringings. They also expressed the need and want for peace and happiness in their lives. Ethan and Toni’s love for Jehovah brought their relationship to this point and it will continue to be their guiding light throughout many years of marriage.
