Once part of the original 2,538 acre working rancho and vacation retreat of Leo Carrillo (who acted in almost 100 films from 1927 to 1950 and co-starred in the TV series The Cisco Kid) the historic Leo Carrillo Ranch is an extraordinary educational and recreational resource. The City of Carlsbad has stabilized, preserved and restored many of the buildings on this 27 acre parcel. Historic structures at Ranch Carrillo Carlsbad include a visitors center, hand-crafted adobe buildings, hacienda, reflecting pool, cabana, cantina, carriage house tack shed, stable, barn and foundry and equipment shed. It can be found on the Citywide Trails System 4-mile long Rancho Carrillo Trail. Self-guided walking tours and 13-minute introductory film give an overview. Guided 90-minute walking tours are offered on Saturdays. Leo Carrillo Ranch is a 27-acre historical park with irregular earthen and paved surfaces, including without limitations, stairs and trails. It is recommended that visitors wear appropriate shoes for the uneven terrain within this historic park. No pets allowed. Dogs are prohibited in Carlsbad’s parks. It is unlawful to vandalize, damage, destroy, cut, injure, or remove any of the park’s historic, cultural, and natural features. Carrillo Ranch is a designated local, State, and National Historic Landmark. Children must remain under adult supervision at all times. Smoking is not permitted in any city facility. Anyone wishing to support the restoration of the ranch by donations or relevant furnishing, artifacts or memorabilia they would like to share with the public may give donations to the Carrillo Ranch Trust Fund.
