The Michigan Central Station originally opened in December 1913 and served as the gateway to Detroit, with more than 4,000 passengers a day at its peak in the 1940s. But as travel patterns changed, the Station closed on January 6, 1988. For more than three decades, neglect and vandalism made the vacant structure an infamous symbol of Detroit’s financial decline and disinvestment. In 2018, Ford Motor Company acquired the property to restore it to its original glory and create a space for innovation. "Take a tour and delve into its fascinating past—from the vision of railroad tycoon William Vanderbilt to its role as a sister station to New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. This tour offers a rare opportunity to explore the historic spaces of the station while learning about the ongoing restoration process. Marvel at the work of more than 3,100 skilled craftspeople, see how innovative technologies like 3D printing are being used, and discover what’s next for Michigan Central."
Aside from taking a walk or bike ride on the Detroit Riverwalk, take in the sight of new Detroit developments, splash around in several fountains and splash parks for kids, ride the carousel, enjoy nature areas and take in the views of both Detroit and Canada.
A Detroit institution. Just be prepared to walk out of there smelling like onions.
