Info on Nigerian Ceremony

The Wedding Website of Mattie Katherine Holmes and Tomi Adediji
We have listed some important information on Nigerian Ceremonies so you feel welcomed and informed before joining us to celebrate. Please read through this page to learn more about the Nigerian traditions that will be happening at our Friday ceremony!

Ceremony

Before our Western wedding, we’ll honor Nigerian (Yoruba) heritage with a Traditional Engagement Ceremony; a joyful and symbolic celebration that unites not only us but also our two families. In Yoruba culture, marriage is seen as the coming together of two families and two lineages, not just two individuals. The engagement ceremony is filled with music, dancing, prayer, humor, and heartfelt blessings. Please see the link below for more information on the Engagement Ceremony:

Traditional Attire

For our Nigerian ceremony, we warmly invite guests to celebrate with us by wearing traditional Yoruba attire if they feel comfortable. Women typically wear an iro and buba (a wrapped skirt and blouse) or a fitted dress, often paired with a gele, a beautifully wrapped headpiece that adds height and sophistication. Men traditionally wear an agbada (a flowing, wide-sleeved robe) or buba and sokoto (top and trousers), styled with a structured cap. While traditional attire is warmly welcomed and celebrated, it is not required—guests are absolutely welcome to wear formal attire if that feels most comfortable.
