We had already known each other for a few years when we both volunteered to spend our spring break serving the homeless with our Catholic Student Organization at UH. We spent every day together serving the homeless and every evening staying up and talking. The more we got to know each other the more sparks began to fly. By the end of the trip, we had already agreed to go on a first date to the zoo. We both found serving the underserved rewarding, but we found the true treasure in each other.
Kathryn's family often vacations in a rented canal house in Jamaica Beach to fish and get away from the city. On Tomas's second trip with the family, he had two objectives: catch lots of fish, and ask for her parent's blessing to marry her. After finally getting them alone nearly a week in a tiny house with 7 people, he finally was able to tell her parents how much she meant to him, and promised to always care for her, provide for her, and most of all love her. Needless to say, he got the blessing. However, being in a small house, Kathryn became suspicious when she noticed that the three of us were missing. Upon coming down the stairs from the balcony, she immediately began interrogating Tomas and her parents. Their response: "We were just looking at the boats in the canal"... Kathryn was not convinced. Fast forward two days: Houston Day (7/13). Tomas had the ring and the blessing. He saw no reason to wait any longer. He asked Kathryn to join him at Hermann Park (our first date location) for a picnic. After finishing our food, we went for a walk to the bench we shared on our first date. Unfortunately it was taken by another couple. So we proceeded to find a new bench. After a short nervous conversation from Tomas, he finally begins to lead into professing his love for Kathryn. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small wooden box. Down on one knee, he asked her the question she had been expecting since he had walked down the stairs at Jamaica Beach. He opened the box, and she said yes! They embraced and tried to avoid the ducks surrounding them.
