For those who want to experience a bit more of Cambodia beyond the beaches, Koh Rong also offers a few low-key, meaningful ways to connect with local culture. Join a Khmer Cooking Class: Learn how to make traditional Cambodian dishes like fish amok, green mango salad, or banana coconut dessert. Classes are hands-on, fun, and a great way to taste more of the local flavours — plus you get to eat what you make! Visit a Local Village: Take a guided trip to one of the nearby Cambodian villages on the island. It’s a chance to see how people live, learn about daily life. The pace is slow and welcoming — often lots of kids playing.
If you feel like a bit of adventure, take a tuk tuk or drive to visit nearby beaches. Each has its own atmosphere; from quiet and secluded to lively and social. We’ve listed a couple of our favourites below! 1. Lonely Beach: golden sands, a jungle gym, cocktail shack by the beach. It is peaceful and beautiful. 2. Palm beach: visit the beach restaurant for cocktails, accross the sea you can see the nearby Sok San private island (this island resort charges guests 1000 US dollars per night!) 3. Long beach: the best view of the sunset , as well as being the place we got engaged!
Of course, one of the best things to do is nothing at all. Bring a good book, float in the water, or take a nap in a hammock!
Explore the calm coastline by kayak or canoe. Paddle out, and you may spot tiny fish jumping out the water!
Expect tropical fish, coral, and a fun boat day out on the water. On dark nights, the water around the island glows with natural bioluminescent plankton — little sparkles of light that swirl around you as you move. We plan to see this on our chartered boat trip day!
