March 22, 2017. David had recently moved back to DC from New York, finishing up his third month at a new law firm. Amanda, still teaching kindergarten at Garrison Elementary, was just a few months away from finishing her sixth and final year at DC public schools while contemplating where to start law school in the fall. The JSwipe app (think “Chosen People Tinder”) matched them together with what would become a prophetic “Mazel Tov!” #MazelToTheMillers indeed. Forecasting her superior leadership and decision-making skills, Amanda messaged first and ultimately suggested Bar Charley, a delightful neighborhood spot on 18th Street in DC. On a surprisingly crowded Wednesday night, the pair jumped on an open set of barstools and began to talk. While people came and went and the scenery changed around them, they sat on those stools, looking only at each another, captivated in conversation over an undisclosed number of old fashioneds (Amanda’s maiden voyage with her now favorite cocktail). Neither looked down at their phones until well past midnight.
That magical first date quickly led to another, and then a dinner date, and then more and more time together. On a literally perfect spring Saturday (May 27 to be exact) the two lovebirds took a long walk from Dupont Circle to Roosevelt Island and around the National Mall. A feeling one cannot fully describe using words in the English language but that may only be felt by those who know it came over each of them that day. Something special was going on here. Amanda eventually opted for American University’s Washington College of Law (WCL), keeping her in DC and allowing their love to flourish. David received the lovely benefit of going through 1L’s unique first-year-of-law-school stress for the second time. And so began their partnership of tackling life’s challenges and always facing whatever was thrown their way together. Amanda continued to excel at WCL while she and David became inseparable teammates. Eating and drinking their way through their beloved District, they would eventually bring these talents to exotic locales like Mexico, Cuba, Williamsport and many places in between. Amanda became a frequent visitor to David’s house at 1702 Swann Street while David got to know Amanda’s many, many, many, many awesome friends.
March 22, 2021. After moving in together the big question went from a matter of “if” to simply “when”. After securing the hardware, David thought popping the question to coincide with the anniversary of their first date would be fun. One small thing he forgot to account for was the global pandemic that would change the entire world. Great timing, sir. Just fantastic. An epic weekend trip to New Orleans complete with a surprise proposal? How about no flying during a pandemic. Ok, so how about reserving Bar Charley all for themselves for a romantic proposal? The owner loved the idea and things were all set, but apparently the DC government did not share this view when they shut all indoor dining down the next day. In the end, it’s not the pageantry, but the love that stands the test of time. Plan C for COVID was a beautiful walk around town followed by a picture-perfect rooftop proposal. Somehow, he even managed to sneak flowers, champagne, and Amanda’s favorite snacks into their apartment to celebrate immediately afterwards. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Being together near-constantly during the pandemic, David and Amanda have only grown closer while enjoying life’s adventures together. Amanda went from law student to graduate to passing the bar to working attorney. David left law firm life to return to the House of Representatives. They bought their first place, moving almost two whole blocks to the other side of the Giant in Columbia Heights. In February, Ruthie Biscuit Gari (RBG) Miller joined the family. This impossibly cute, small but mighty almost 20 pounds of pure puppy sassiness has adapted well to her role of absolutely running the house. April 30, 2022. A mere 769 days from when their engagement began (but hey, who’s counting?), the special day is finally here. If you are reading this – and made it all the way here – you already know how special you are to David and Amanda. It’s officially time to party like we’ve been waiting over 2 years for this because . . . well, we have. Looking forward to celebrating with all of you!
