Jonathan and Nadia's favorite dessert when in Portugal are pastéis de nata. These are Portuguese custard tarts. The best place to try your own pastel de nata is at NATA Lisboa, a coffee shop in the very center of the city. Nadia's cousins, Hélio and Vanessa, opened the first and only NATA Lisboa in Braga.
A Francesinha is a Portuguese sandwich typically made with bread, ham, linguiça, fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat. It's covered with melted cheese and a hot thick tomato and beer sauce. We think Taberna Belga has the best francesinha in the city and so does everyone else! If you want to visit this restaurant, please be prepared to wait for a table - but we promise, it's worth it!
Centésima Página is a beautiful bookshop with foreign-language titles. It includes a charming cafe that serves a rotating selection of tasty quiches along with salads and desserts. It also has outdoor tables housed within a rustic garden that serves as a unique escape from the city.
Its name means Good Jesus of the Mount. The Sanctuary is a notable example of a pilgrimage site with a monumental Baroque stairway (Via Sacra do Bom Jesus) that climbs 116 metres (381 feet), a church, a large wooded area (Bom Jesus Park), a few hotels and a funicular railway (Bom Jesus Elevator). On 7 July 2019, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro (or Sanctuary of Sameiro) is a sanctuary and Marian shrine located in Braga. It offers a fantastic view over the city of Braga and is very close to Bom Jesus do Monte. Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Sameiro is also where Nadia's Avô Joaquim and Avó Candida were married.
The Cathedral of Braga (Sé de Braga) is one of the most important monuments in the city of Braga. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Braga. The Diocese of Braga dates from the 3rd century AD, being one of the oldest in the peninsula and the oldest cathedral in Portugal. The cathedral underwent significant modifications throughout times, so that today it is a mix of romanesque, Gothic, manueline and baroque styles. The tombs of Henry of Burgundy and his wife, Theresa of León, the parents of D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, are preserved inside the Sé.
Right in the center of the city, you will find the Tourism office of Braga. This office is a great resource for anyone that wants to learn more about things to do around the city or just grab a few maps of the area.
