Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is one of the most popular cities in Vietnam. This busy city is a concrete jungle with many coffee shops, growing skylines and activities. It is one of our favorite places! HCMC is divided into different Districts, but keep in mind the Districts are in no particular order. Most of the tourist attractions can be found in District 1, including the location of our hotel. In Vietnamese the word District is 'Quan' , when typing in an address this information will be helpful.
Vietnam is very different from the USA, to prepare yourself on what to expect, our best advice is to be open-minded regarding the cultural difference. When you arrive to Ho Chi Minh City it will feel like a very fast-paced environment with a lot of things going on at once. Some may describe it as 'hectic' but also a huge eye-opening experience where you will be able to experience our culture and see many amazing things. You will see parts of Vietnam that are more modern but also some areas that are less developed. Doing research ahead of time will be beneficial and viewing the information on our website.
Don't worry if you don't speak Vietnamese. Many tourist attractions will have English speaking employees to communicate the important things with you, for example pricing. To be safe, we recommend downloading the Google Translate App on your phone to support with any language barrier. This is a great opportunity to learn and strengthen your Vietnamese!
If you are staying in the area we recommend for hotels (see Travel tab), many attractions will be walking distance for you. Aside from walking, download the Grab app, it is like the Uber of Asia. You can connect Grab with your credit card and save your cash for other purposes. The Grab app will be in English but the drivers speak Vietnamese. It is common for the Grab driver to call you to confirm your booking on the app, if you are unable to pickup the phone or cannot speak Vietnamese, you can chat with them on the app, sending a simple 'OK' message will work. Vietnam has very humid weather, pack what you would wear in a tropical climate. Bring comfortable walking shoes and clothes. We suggest not over-packing (even though it is tempting) because you may love the shopping here, leave extra room in your suitcase! You can find international brands such as H&M and Zara, in addition to exciting local brands in HCMC. There will be many souvenirs as well and some purchases can be very affordable. We recommend packing common medication that you may need such as Pepto Bismol (especially if you want to be adventurous with food yet have a sensitive stomach) and Advil (for the hangovers). To save weight and room in your suitcase, you can buy toiletries such as shampoo, tooth paste, etc, when you arrive in HCMC. It's cheaper and can be found at the many convenient shops nearby. To be safe, we suggest not bringing valuables such as expensive jewelry on your trip.
