Ballard is a Scandinavian fishing and railroad town that was once the second largest city in King County. Now it’s one of Seattle’s most popular neighborhoods, nestled against Shilshole Bay to the west and Salmon Bay to the south. Ballard is home to terrific parks, restaurants, shops and pubs — and more breweries than any other neighborhood in the Northwest.
Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the Ballard Locks is one of Seattle’s most popular tourist attractions, especially during the sunny months. The grounds also feature a fish ladder and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden — one of the most beautiful park settings in Seattle.
Just off the Ballard Bridge, Fishermen’s Terminal is home for hundreds of fishing boats that spend months on the open sea off the coast of Alaska. You might even find a boat or two made famous through Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch.
Discovery Park is a 534 acre natural area park operated by the Seattle Parks and Recreation. It is the largest city park in Seattle, and occupies most of the former Fort Lawton site. The site is one of breathtaking majesty. Situated on Magnolia Bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Discovery Park offers spectacular view of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. The secluded site includes two miles of protected tidal beaches as well as open meadow lands, dramatic sea cliffs, forest groves, active sand dunes, thickets and streams.
It happens to be Pride weekend in Seattle when we are getting married and Seattle will be buzzing with activity. Seattle Pride takes place every June as part of the larger “Seattle Pridefest” which includes a week long series of circuit parties, BBQs, live performances, cultural activities and of course the main parade which takes place on the last Sunday of the event. The Official Seattle Pride Parade is held on the final Sunday of the week long festivites and begins at 11 am at the corner of Union Street and 4th Avenue. It lasts until around 1:30 pm and runs north along 4th Avenue to Denny Way. Most pride events occur annually, and many take place around June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, a pivotal moment in modern LGBT social movements. Don't miss, Seattle Pridefest at the Seattle Center, which takes place Sunday from noon until 8 pm in the shadows of the iconic Space Needle. It is the largest free Pride festival in America.
