In the summer of 2017, Maddie noticed a "cute, funny guy in a plaid shirt" taking classes at the same improv theater. After realizing TJ only wore plaid shirts (we're working on it) Maddie decided he was still funny and cute so she struck up a conversation at the bar after class. After weeks of putting out the vibes, TJ finally realized Maddie was interested when she stayed talking to the table with keys in hand until 11 PM on a TUESDAY!! He then finally asked her out over Facebook Messenger a week later.
TJ told Maddie that he had made a dinner reservation at Young Joni (their favorite restaurant) on Sept 12, 2019, two years after they had first met. Then he TRICKED Maddie and told her he needed to swing by the Guthrie Theater to purchase a gift certificate for his mom (sorry Mary, he never got one). After walking out on the Guthrie's "never-ending bridge" that overlooks the gorgeous Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge, Maddie turned around and TJ was on one knee. After what seemed like hours of tears and repeating "you're joking", Maddie said Yes! and they made their way to Young Joni to have dinner at their favorite place. Arriving just MINUTES before their reservation, TJ insisted they go to the Back Bar for a quick cocktail. Maddie, starving, insisted that the Back Bar was closed but as they opened the door, dozens of their family and friends were waiting inside for a surprise engagement party.
