FAQs

Question

What's the deal with Fire Island?

Answer

Fire Island is a small barrier beach island off the south shore of Long Island. It's about 30 miles long, but less than half a mile wide at its widest point. Cars are not allowed on the island, so walking or biking are the main forms of transportation once on the island.

Question

If I can't drive to Fire Island, how do I get there?

Answer

By ferry! Fire Island Ferries runs regularly scheduled ferry service between Bay Shore, NY (on Long Island) and the communities on the west side of Fire Island, including Kismet, where our wedding will take place. The Kismet ferry terminal is located at 123 Maple Avenue, Bay Shore, NY, behind the Lakehouse restaurant. Paid parking is available at the ferry terminal. Please visit https://fireislandferries.com/ for more information, including schedules.

Question

Can I get to the ferry using public transit?

Answer

The Long Island Railroad stops at Bay Shore, and the train station is about 1 mile from the ferry dock. It's a quick ride with David's Taxi or using Uber/Lyft (or a 20-minute walk) from there.

Question

If I'm traveling from outside the NY area, where should I fly into?

Answer

Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is the nearest airport, about a 20 minute drive from the ferry dock in Bay Shore. It's a smaller airport serviced by Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, Breeze, and Avelo Airlines. If MacArthur is not an option, we would recommend flying into LaGuardia Airport (LGA) or JFK Airport (JFK). Depending on traffic, each is a 1-2 hour drive to/from the Kismet ferry dock in Bay Shore. It's also possible to get from JFK or LGA to Bay Shore by public transit by taking either the AirTrain (from JFK) or the bus (from LGA) to the Jamaica Long Island Railroad station, and taking the Long Island Railroad to Bay Shore.

Question

Where should I stay?

Answer

Unfortunately, lodging is scarce on Fire Island. We have reserved all rooms at the two hotels in Kismet for our guests. There are 12 rooms at the Fire Island Boatel and 5 rooms at the Moonrise Motel. In addition, there are a handful of rental houses available. We are working with Irina, a local realtor, and she has secured some limited house options. In addition, there are a couple of additional houses available on Airbnb and/or VRBO in Kismet, and a few more available in Fair Harbor, which is about a 30-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride from Kismet. If you want to stay on Fire Island, we recommend booking as soon as possible! We have also reserved a room block at the Courtyard by Marriott in Central Islip, which is about a 15-minute drive from the ferry. We will provide transportation from the Courtyard to the ferry on the day of the wedding. Please see the "Travel" page on this website for more information about lodging options.

Question

If I'm not staying on Fire Island, how will I get back after the wedding?

Answer

We will charter a ferry or water taxi to take guests back to Long Island after the wedding reception.

Question

What's the dress code for the wedding?

Answer

Beach Semi-Formal. Think suits (ties optional), maxi or cocktail dresses, or even a jumpsuit. If you have a light colored suit, or a linen/khaki/seersucker suit, this is the time to bust it out! If not, no sweat-- darker or more classic suits are fine too. The ceremony will be on the beach, about a 10-minute walk from ferry dock (and a 10-minute walk back to the reception), so flats are recommended. That said, feel free to take shoes off for the ceremony. If you're looking for inspiration, here's a helpful article: https://www.brides.com/beach-wedding-attire-4842339

Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

While we love your little ones, we have decided to make our wedding ceremony and reception an adults-only celebration. We hope this allows everyone to relax and enjoy the evening, and we truly appreciate your understanding.
