I believe our meeting is divine, even if it began in a rather traditional way—with a little help from our mothers. Although Olalekan and I had crossed paths as children through family friendships, I had long forgotten what he looked like and only remembered that our families were close. Years later, while I was pursuing my master's degree at the University of Ibadan, our mothers had just returned from the burial ceremony of my late great-grandmother. During their conversation, Olalekan's mother expressed her desire for us to be matched and jokingly suggested that I was exactly her son's type. I laughed it off and thought nothing more of it. Less than two months later, a few days before my birthday, Olalekan called and asked me out. What started as a simple first date quickly became something special. He was kind, genuine, and intentional, and I found myself looking forward to every conversation and opportunity to spend time together. As our relationship grew, so did my admiration for him. His attentiveness, intelligence, thoughtfulness, generosity, and care consistently reassured me that I had met someone truly remarkable. And a big plus is that I had "a thing" for medical doctors, and he just happened to be one 😉 Over the years, our love was tested by distance and other difficulties. We navigated multiple relocations—first when he moved to Abuja, then when I relocated to the United States for my PhD, and later when he moved to Ireland for his MPH. Despite the miles between us and the many challenges that could have pulled us apart, we chose each other again and again. Through every season, our commitment deepened, our friendship strengthened, and our love endured. Then, nearly seven years after that first phone call, Olalekan asked me to marry him in the most romantic setting. Of course, I said YES! Today, we still smile when we think about that unforgettable moment and the journey that brought us here. As we prepare to stand before our family and friends and declare our love, I am filled with gratitude, excitement, and anticipation for the beautiful future we will continue to build together.
