Located in Panacea, just 40 minutes south of Tallahassee, Rock Landing Marina is a great spot to soak in Florida’s coastal beauty. Whether you're into fishing, boating, or just enjoying the waterfront, this laid-back marina has something for everyone. We stopped here during our engagement trip and loved the dockside restaurant, which has a beautiful open deck overlooking the marina. Perfect for enjoying fresh seafood with a view!
As the state history museum, it focuses on artifacts and eras unique to Florida's development and on roles that Floridians have played in national and global events. This museum is a delight, and a morning or afternoon well-spent, especially for a view of the mastodon skeleton, which was recovered from the nearby Wakulla Springs.
Thirty (30) minutes south of Tallahassee lies the St. Mark's region on Florida's Gulf Coast. Guests wishing to experience what native Floridians describe as "Old Florida," can visit this untouched portion of the Gulf, and witness the natural beauty of Florida. There is also the historical St. Mark's Lighthouse to visit as well.
Take a scenic drive down one of several of Tallahassee's canopy roads. Guests will enjoy the stunning scenery of the live oak lined roads. Follow along Miccosukee Road out to the Greenway, where visitors can park and enjoy easy hiking paths.
Florida State University (FSU) is the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida. The school is known for it's beautiful red brick buildings and live oak trees that shade the campus. A feature of the campus, Doak Campbell Stadium, is the largest continuous brick structure in the United States. Take a stroll around campus, and be sure to visit the Sweet Shop.
The Knott House, built in 1843, has served as an important site in Florida History. The Knott House was the temporary headquarters of the Union Army in Tallahassee. Additionally, the Emancipation Proclamation was read from the steps of the building on May 20, 1865, declaring freedom for all slaves in Florida.
Mission San Luis de Apalachee was a Spanish Franciscan mission built in 1656. The Mission was part of Spain's efforts to colonize the Florida Peninsula and to convert the Timucuan and Apalachee Indians to Christianity. The museum now hosts re-creations of period buildings and archaeological excavations at the only reconstructed Spanish mission in Florida.
