It was during the summer before our Freshman year at Geneseo, and while at orientation, both of us needed to sit for a Spanish proficiency exam. This was one of the first moments of orientation and by chance, in the basement of Milne Library, we ended up sitting down at computers next to each other. As the test was about to start Aaron noticed Ashley sitting next to him looking puzzled as she tried to get the test up on the computer. In a joke that was only funny to him, he recommended "it may help if you turn on the computer first." It's a miracle Ash didn't change seats and ignore him, in his defense the computer truthfully wasn't on. After the test, and being the first people we had met that day, we ended up walking out of the library together. We casually struck up a conversation, met each other's parents (which is hilarious in hindsight), and exchanged names to add each other on Facebook, and that was that. Through our freshman year, we stayed in touch but Aaron's invitations to hang out in the basement of his residence hall across campus which was "a total bromance" weren't too enticing. Come sophomore year, things changed though. Between some mutual activities on campus, and some common courses, we started getting lunch together before class. At first it was once a week, and the lunches frequently consisted of Aaron filling the quiet moments as Ash would sit and listen. But as the year went on lunches became more frequent, late night study sessions in the Onondaga 'Bullpen" became common and we started to really hit it off. In April of that year we had our first date- dinner at Questa Lasagna in Mount Morris, NY, a walk down Main Street Geneseo, and a screening of the movie Wall-E. Seven years, a kitten, puppy, Master's degrees, and countless adventures later we're so excited to say "I Do". Who would've thought the first person we met in our freshman orientation would end up being our person.
A month before the proposal, Aaron and Ashley welcomed their golden doodle puppy, Maisy, into the family. In preparation, Aaron took up researching different hiking trails, dog friendly breweries, etcetera that they could bring the puppy to. In the midst of this process, Aaron found a blog for the Top Dog Friendly Nature Trails in Rochester. For some background, Aaron loves to hike; Ashley…not so much. The running joke is that Ashley love’s nature trails, not actual hiking. With this, the post was a must read. One of the trails in the post was in the woods and opened up to a daffodil field, Ashley’s favorite flower. With this the planning began! The morning of Aaron had to go in to work leaving Ashley alone. According to Ashley, Aaron had been acting “extra affectionate” which tipped her off that something may be up. Wanting to ensure she was prepared, Ashley spent the morning getting ready just in case. When Aaron came home, he found Ashley “ready” for the nature walk in a cardigan with her hair and makeup done. Once at the park Aaron, Ashley, and Maisy went off on their nature walk. Once in the field they took some time to enjoy the flowers, let the puppy explore, and to sit on the bench in the meadow. As they sat and talked, Aaron worked up the nerve to pop the question, which took… a while. Meanwhile, Ashley began to think that maybe something wasn’t happening, as they’d been out for while and nothing had happened. Eventually, Aaron stood up and took Ashley by both hands, starting a speech he had been rehearsing on the puppy for about a month. As he began Ashley stopped him, pointing out something the puppy was doingy; later explaining that she got flustered. Aaron redirected and started again, got down on one knee and asked the question. This is at least what Ashley tells him happened, as Aaron blacked out at this moment. Ashley said yes! Followed quickly by an “I knew it!” as her suspicions from earlier that day were confirmed.
