Our paths should never have crossed. Randee, working in allergy medicine at the time, only occasionally floated and picked up extra shifts in urgent care when they were available. Tim worked mostly in a different part of the Salt Lake valley, and only occasionally picked up an extra shift at the Salt Lake InstaCare. On January 2nd, 2023, they both picked up an extra shift in urgent care. Despite never working with her and not recognizing her, Randee caught Tim's eye. He didn't think or do much about it, though (except casually change work stations so that he'd end up standing next to her). Throughout the day, things were just business as usual. While he was charting inbetween patients, Tim would hear bits and pieces of casual conversation between Randee and the other medical assistants. Some of this included Tim learning that Randee was single as she was venting that she'd been ghosted by a guy. Sadly, he also overheard her talking about her one of her criteria for a future partner: he'd need to be a few inches taller than her. As he walked by Randee a few times, Tim quickly sized up that he wasn't taller than her. With that, Tim reminded himself he'd already made peace with staying single the rest of his post-divorce life, while Randee had said she was ready to give up on dating altogether, too. It soon became apparent that the day was going to be historically bad (incredibly busy). The clinic was on pace to break the record for number of patients seen in a day. As Randee was leaving part-way through the shift, she made a throwaway comment to Tim that she bet they'd end up seeing 150 patients that day. The final total: 132. Why does the number matter? The next day, Randee slid into Tim's DM's on... Microsoft Teams (how romantic) to ask him the final patient tally. She'll claim to this day that it was an innocent question, and Tim will never believe her.
