Tim and I became engaged on Christmas Day. The timing could not be more perfect as we were hosting our kids, family and friends as part of the holiday celebration. It was there that we made the big announcement. And, that was not the only announcement. Our nephew and his girlfriend, Drake and Kaat, announced they were pregnant with Dade. It was a very special day for both reasons and one that we will always remember.
Our first date is kind of a funny story, but the unique circumstance of meeting in person brought such a clear glimpse into the adventure, humor and unwavering support we would find in one another for the next 13 years. We first connected through a dating app and after a few phone conversations, we agreed to meet in person at The Crab Pot in Long Beach. Janice recently had knee surgery and was wearing a complicated, full-leg velcro cast. She did not want Tim to see her hobbling around and not looking her best, so she came up with a clever idea - she decided to arrive early so she would have time to remove her cast, throw it in the back of the car, sneak into the restaurant, get a table and be seated before he arrived. However, Tim had also arrived early, earlier than Janice and was waiting in the parking lot for his date to arrive. While Tim was waiting, he saw this woman pull in and he wondered if this might be Janice. He then watched this woman get out of her car, take off a huge and very complicated leg brace and throw it into the trunk of her car, then hobble across the parking lot and into the Crab Pot. Tim was perplexed and thinking at the time, “That can’t be my date, can it? She didn’t say anything about a limp during our phone calls.” But, he went into the Crab Pot anyway to check it out. Sure enough, the limping woman was his date and Tim joined Janice politely without saying a word about what he witnessed. Janice thought her secret was safe. As the night progressed, they shared a bottle of wine and fun conversation was flowing. As the date began to come to a close, Janice desperately needed to use the restroom but did not want Tim to see her limping towards the back of the restaurant. So with another sneaky plan, she decided to hold it and wait for him to leave. Because they were having such a good time, the wait was long and excruciating. Janice wasn't sure how much longer she could last as they were also laughing and having a good time. Finally, Tim got up to leave and Janice was safe to hurry and limp to the restroom, hobble back to her car, put her brace back on and make it home to reflect on the night. She soon after asked Tim on a second date. After a healed knee and a few more outings, Tim finally confessed to Janice that he saw her in the parking lot of the Crab Pot on their first date - they had a great laugh and Janice realized she had found a fun and supportive person and she didn't need to hide anything from Tim. Likewise, Tim realized he found a person who was going to make the best out of any situation and not let something like a leg brace deter her from adventure, joy and laughter. It was just the beginning of their unconditional appreciation and support for one another. The rest is history! Since then, they have united their worlds and brought together an amazing family of grown kids, their spouses, grandkids, new friends and Sadie, their sweet, rambunctious labradoodle into their lives. And now, they are tying the knot and celebrating with each of you!
