Melissa (Kayla's mom) hired a cute boy (Patrick) to work in one of her summer programs for kids with special needs. Thinking Kayla and cute boy might make friends, she assigned them to work in the same classroom. On day one of the summer program, Kayla immediately thought Pat was cute and sweet and a little shy. After learning he had a boat... she invited herself to go tubing and they spent the rest of the summer falling in love.

Kayla, Patrick, Melissa, and Talia were on vacation in Italy. After three days in Rome, they were exploring Tuscany by car, making sure to stop at every vineyard they saw. Before dinner and after a suggestion by Patrick, they stopped at the Castello di Monteriggioni because it was a cool looking castle on a hill. There was wine tasting, a glass of wine on the terrace, and a stroll through a grove of olive trees. Pat turned to Kayla and said "let me take your picture in front of the pretty castle" as they were leaving. She turned around to look at the castle and when she turned back, Pat was on one knee. He asked and she said YES! Tears of joy were shed and there was lots of jumping and hugging and squealing. The rest of the vacation was one big celebration!
