North Meets the South

“We weren’t looking—but love found us.”

My sister Denise invited me over one day, and I was in desperate need of a car wash. She casually said, “Come by—Fred will wash your car.” I remember asking, “What is a Fred? And who is Fred?” Little did I know… Fred had been walking past me the whole time, and I hadn’t even noticed him. He took my keys and asked for my number. I immediately said, “Why???” He replied, “I’mma call you when I’m done.” When he saved my number in his phone, it wasn’t under my name—it said “White Dodge.” I still laugh about that to this day. Then came the negotiation… he tried to charge me $45 for the wash, and I said, “No sir!” After a little back and forth, we settled on $30. And just like that, something unexpected began. After washing my car, Fred started calling me—checking in on me while I traveled. “What you eat?” “Did you make it back safe?” “What time is it where you’re at?” I wasn’t used to that kind of care, but I loved it. It felt genuine. He would send me songs, share stories about his life in Mississippi, and talk about the deep love he has for his family. That love stood out to me. Fred didn’t just care about me—he cared about what the people closest to him thought of me. He introduced me to his world, even taking me on a cruise to meet his siblings. He also made sure to ask my closest friends what they thought of him. That meant everything. Fred knew exactly what he wanted—and what he didn’t. He would jokingly say he didn’t want a woman who smoked cigarettes or cussed too much (lol), and somehow, we still fit perfectly. We truly are a “North meets South” kind of love. On his 50th birthday, I was told to “hide him”—and let’s just say… he was hidden VERY well. That moment became the beginning of us publicly stepping into our relationship. Fred would practice proposing to me, and we would laugh and dream about our future. We’ve had so many joyful moments, but also some tough times—times where it felt like life was throwing one thing after another at us. But through it all, we always found our way back. No matter what, Fred would say, “I love you.” Every time. Without fail. He is my gentle giant. There was a time I told my Sister Circle that I didn’t think I was capable of being loved by a man. But Fred showed me something different. He moved to Chicago for a new life, and neither of us was looking for each other—but somehow, we found each other anyway. And that’s how our love story began—unexpected, imperfect, but full of care, laughter, and a love that continues to grow every day.
