I didn't think that the man with the funny, sweet profile would respond to my note on CatholicMatch.com. It took a while, but we connected and Tianyu asked me to Mass and coffee with him in his first message. Talk about brave! We were both so nervous on our first date, but he planned carefully, picking out tea for me and preparing topics to discuss. Despite being shy, I could not stop smiling. By the end, we were both hooked. Despite sub-zero temperatures at the Christmas Market and being VERY sick over Valentine’s Day, in February we officially started dating. Two weeks later the world shut down. Amidst the all the tragedy was a blessing for us: my school shut down and Tianyu let me use his internet…and his refrigerator. We spent time sharing thoughts, experiences, and jokes. We explored the parks of Minnesota, traveled to Ohio to meet family, and had important conversations. I found in Tianyu a gentle companion, wise counselor, and brave man. Tianyu says he found in me a tender heart, passionate mind, and fierce defender of truth. In June, I spent a month and a half in Ohio. This would be a test of our relationship. Were we just infatuated with each other? Would our relationship continue to flourish despite being so far apart? Spoiler alert: It did flourish. We grew more deliberate in our communication and clearly saw each other's love and wisdom. When I came back to MN I was sure Tianyu was the man for me. And Tianyu started picking out a ring. But there was still a lot to do: I needed to meet his family (video call) and we wanted to meet each other's friends. It turns out we both have awesome friends, and wonderful families In December Tianyu traveled to Ohio to have The Talk with my dad. Tianyu came back so happy. On January 10th, the feast of the Baptism of Christ, Tianyu asked me to be his wife and begin a new life with him. I said yes. On July 16th we will start the next stage of our journey. Please keep us in your prayers!
