We met in Maui, at Kim & David’s wedding. Kim is my cousin and David is Beto’s brother. We had a quick encounter on the dance floor while I was dancing with my family, and Beto was dancing with his family. I misstepped, almost fell back and Beto caught me. I said “thank you”, he said “you’re welcome”, and I left to take a seat and recoup. A bit later, my Tia Amalia called me back to the floor. I declined, but she insisted and went to get me. As we were walking back up she says “let’s look for someone to dance with you!”. Beto was “coincidentally” passing by and overheard. He stopped, said “I’ll dance with her”, and we were inseparable the rest of the night.
Beto’s birthday landed on a Saturday that year, and I was planning a party for him at La Chuperia. Between the food, drinks, decorations, favors, and guest count I was very distracted leading up to it. He saw his chance and decided he would propose at the party. He bought the ring 2 days before! While hosting, my mom came up to me and said “I have a surprise for Beto and it’s here.” It was a trio. He had looped her in on his plan, and she hired them to play our song for the proposal. There, in front of our family and friends, he got down on one knee and proposed. ♥️
