In January 2014, both Shelby and Bobby were students at Virginia Tech (Shelby was a Sophomore and Bobby a Junior). They met as most college students do - at a party. Neither had plans to go out that night, but their respective friend groups dragged them along to a party hosted by a mutual acquaintance. After being randomly paired up as beer-pong partners, Bobby became impressed by Shelby's ability to rattle off international relations facts, while Shelby was impressed with Bobby's beer pong skills. What started as a fun night quickly morphed into something more serious, as only 3 days later Bobby asked Shelby to become his girlfriend. 6 years, 2 apartments, and 8 countries visited later, Bobby asked her to marry him.

In keeping with their own traditions, Bobby and Shelby decided to enter into their engagement equally. After much discussion over red wine and whiskey, they agreed that they would pick out a ring together, and Bobby would propose in the Fall of 2019. Shelby's ring was designed by her favorite jewelry designer who is based in Dublin, Ireland, and they were lucky enough to be able to work with her on the ring when they were in Ireland in 2018. On October 5, 2019, Bobby took Shelby out to the garden outside their apartment, gave a heartfelt speech, and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. She said yes.
