How We Met

Swipe Right

Tom and Jenni met late one Friday night on an online dating site. They were matched with an 83% compatibility rating. Jenni was the first to reach out after seeing Tom's grinning picture and reading his slightly sarcastic profile. They texted late into Friday night and most of Saturday. Sunday morning, a freezing December day, Tom reached out to Jenni to see if she wanted some coffee. Jenni does "Brunch" instead, and Tom picked her up and took her to a nearby cafe. Both wanted a place that was easy to escape from if the other turned out to be wacko. Tom kept grinning and Jenni kept twirling her hair the whole time. Two years later, Tom is more than delighted to propose to a woman who matched him as a "B- match" on a dating app. Tom still grins and Jenni still twirls.

The Proposal

June 26, 2018

In May 2018, Tom walked out of a Helzberg Diamonds store with a ring in his pocket. This ring was special, purchased after many a night spent scanning thousands of rings online with Jenni. After listening to her colorful critiques, "hate that one", "that's hideous," "ugh, you think THAT one's pretty?", he had found the one ring she'd adore. A month later, Tom was getting pretty antsy to propose to Jenni. The ring was burning a hole in his pocket. Tom couldn't catch a break. Many a "romantic picnic" or "night out for two" kept getting turned into "double-dates" and "Can so-and-so come?" After another weekend's plans to get Jenni alone and pop the question was destroyed (unbeknownst to Jenni, of course), Tom decided to take matters into his own hands. One Tuesday evening, Jenni wanted a quick walk out by the river with Lucy. It was hot, it was sticky, and it was only for Jenni, Tom and Lucy. It was nearly perfect because it was nearly 100 degrees. Along the way, they talked about their day, what they'd make for dinner and the HEAT. Near the end of the trail, a path leads up a hill into full sunshine. Tom planned to propose at the summit where the sun would make the perfect ring sparkle. However, by that point, Jenni had had enough of the heat and made it clear, they were turning back. Tom had to improvise. He asked for a quick selfie to complete the long and hot journey. Everyone crouched down and smiled. Jenni was smiling because she wanted to head home, Tom grinning because he had a secret. Jenni stood back up after saving the pic. However, Tom was still on his knee. "W-what are you doing?" Jenni asked, her eyes the size of dinner plates. She had froze, phone in hand, eyes riveted on the small red box in Tom's hand. "You know what I'm doing," Tom replied with that same grin on his face. Tom asked Jenni to become his wife in the shade of the hill. The ring still sparkled. Tom had to ask twice as she was quite speechless. In the end, she said "Yes."
