Elizabeth and Tommy met via the dating app, bumble. After some brief back and forth conversation, they had a contact hiatus, until mid-January. At the time Elizabeth was still finishing her master's degree at the University of Virginia and living in Charlottesville. She reached out to Tommy asking if he would like to meet up in Richmond after she returned from the Women's March on Washington with her friend, Breck. Tommy replied that he had plans that night. Elizabeth, being the inquisitive type, asked what he had to do. Tommy replied "well, I'm taking my mom on a date to see Star Wars, it's kind of a tradition we have". That sealed the deal. They met at The Answer Brewpub on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, and for those of you who know Tommy well, know that he is not the outgoing-conversation carrier- type person. But nevertheless, the lunch lasted for 3 hours! They certainly enjoyed each others company enough to see each other again and again.
Tommy had made a plan to propose to Elizabeth at one of her favorite places, Smith Mountain Lake. The couple spent the first half of the vacation week in New Hampshire visiting Elizabeth’s parents, and the second half of the week at Tommy’s Aunt and Uncle’s house on Smith Mtn Lake. Their plans altered when their late-night flight from Boston to Richmond was cancelled. The couple was desperate to get to the lake, so instead of rescheduling the flight they rented a car and drove through the night. After a quick cat-nap, the couple ventured onto the lake with their dear friends, Tim and Breck. Sometime on the car ride to the lake, Tommy realized he had forgotten the ring. He told Breck about his plans and that he had forgotten the ring. Breck, like any good friend would, told Elizabeth about Tommy’s foiled plan. From then on, Elizabeth was on high-alert for a proposal. In September Tommy and Elizabeth went to the Outer Banks with two of Elizabeth’s childhood friends. A plan to go watch the sunset signaled to Elizabeth and her friends that this might be THE TIME. Elizabeth decided to look nice just in case, while everyone else was in comfortable clothes. This made Tommy think that Elizabeth knew something was up, because she never misses an opportunity to dress-down. Intent on surprising her, he decided to hold off on the proposal. In October the couple traveled to Blacksburg to attend a VT football game and spend time with Elizabeth’s family on their farm. After returning to Richmond, Elizabeth was frustrated that yet another weekend had come and gone with no proposal, but Tommy had other plans. Tommy had set up his phone to record the proposal on their kitchen island. Tommy called Elizabeth into the kitchen, and she immediately, unintentionally knocked over his phone. Tommy scrambled, threw his phone in his pocket, and asked her to get a popsicle from the freezer, where he had placed the ring box. When she turned around he was on one knee and asked her to marry him!
