We actually have no real confirmed moment of meeting, if you can believe it. We theorize that it could have been while playing a show with our individual bands as early as 2012. It would have been within the context of bandmates of new bands being introduced to each other in a giant group, a sea of faces whose names you are hoping to remember, most likely in a loud club. These interactions are frequent when playing shows--one meets people who pop up in the scene and whom you repeatedly see at shows and parties who become memorable people to you in your community over time. Such was Tom and I--we both knew each other, but we didn't hang out at that time, though we had mutual friends. Cut to 2017--I was out on tour with my band and an unexpected emergency came up at the middle of our tour, and we had to send our drummer, Greg, home. My bandmate Kim had a wild hunch that we should text Tom, and see if he would be willing to fill in for Greg. He agreed (a very unexpected and sure-of-himself move, at least it seemed to me!), learned the set in about the span of 3 days, and we were on the road to our first gig in Nashville together, sleeping in a weird Airbnb cabin with my bandmates in the Smokey Mountains, and eating weird road food. We finished up that run, and THEN my suspicions were confirmed when he asked me out for a date once we made it home. We've been together ever since. Since then, we have had another tour where he filled in on drums where we have seen most of the continental United States and parts of Canada together. Places spanning from Niagara Falls to Charlestown, Kansas City, to New Orleans, to Vancouver, etc, and everywhere in between. We are so lucky to have had that extended time with each other, on the road with all of its fault-enhancing but breathtaking, life defining moments! While our lives have changed in such a way that a tour together would no longer be possible, we value the memory of this and continue to have the best adventures.
