Joe curated a scavenger hunt for Emily's birthday because he knew two things: 1) Emily LOVES scavenger hunts and 2) he had a reputation for accidentally faking proposals. He planned a scavenger hunt with a false ending in which Emily got the gift she had picked out for herself. But, lo and behold, the final clue was tucked beneath the present and she turned around to see Joe down on one knee.
With the pandemic in full swing and formal wedding plans on hold, Joe and Emily were unsure of how long they would have to wait before calling each other husband and wife. They decided to make their marriage official while postponing the celebration with family and friends. Emily and Joe had a private ceremony in the woods near their Massachusetts home with their dogs, parents, and a few siblings in attendance. They cannot thank their relatives enough for braving the surprise snowstorm and bearing with their insistence on a cold, outdoor dinner to ensure everyone's safety. This was also when Emily's challenges with estimation came to light, with Emily ordering enough food for 100 guests despite only 10 people in attendance. Joe bought a chest freezer the next day and they ate Indian food for months to follow, continuously reminding them of their love for one another.
