We recommend Florence as the closest airport to our venue, and the destination from which to coordinate a rental car for the duration of your visit. Larger global airports including Milan and Rome are equally good with high-speed train options to Florence. Flights to Florence are available from nearly all major international airports in Europe and from Milan and Rome as well. *Note some larger European events: Paris Olympics commence June 26th and Euro Cup 2024 is June 14-July 14th in Germany.
Italy has a wonderful railway system with the highest speed train “Frecciarossa” serving between larger cities including Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, and Salerno. https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
You are staying in a rural part of Tuscany and rental cars are highly recommended. Coordinating rental cars amongst groups is also recommended. Most rental car companies are served out of Florence or you could choose to drive from Rome if you are more adventurous. We recommend EuropCar. Make your reservations as early as possible as rates and availability will be much better. If you need to book ground transportation to meet up with your party, cars can be arranged from your accommodations or a taxi from the airport. Driving time Florence to Siena ~ 1 hours and 45 miles Driving time Florence to Montestigliano is ~1 ¼ hours/55 miles. Driving time Rome to Montestigliano is ~ 3 hours. Driving time Milan to Montestigliano is nearly 5 hours. Italian Drivers Licenses are required (if you get pulled over ; ). You can apply for one at AAA for $20 bucks. https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html Pay attention to speed limits. Many roads have tolls booths. Have cash in case the credit card machines aren’t working. In Italy there are cameras everywhere, and they can catch you breaking the law for speeding, running red lights, or entering a ZTL (limited traffic zone) which are usually in the older parts of cities and towns you will be visiting. Pay attention. You will end up getting tickets in the mail months after your visit which is not a good way to remember such an amazing trip!
