Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, is one of the tallest lighthouses in America and has been guiding mariners since 1872. Be sure to check out the historic Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, in the keepers house. The coastal areas surrounding Pigeon Point Light Station is also rich with wildlife. Seals and whales can be seen regularly from the shore!
One of our favorite coffee shops in the Sunset District of SF! We recommend ordering the Build Your Own Damn House special (homemade cinnamon toast, a whole coconut, and a hot cup of coffee). This is truly an SF establishment. For more back story, be sure to listen to the NPR story on Trouble's remarkable owner.
At the northwestern corner of San Francisco, there is wild and windy trail with stunning views at every turn. Lands End's trails winds their way around rocky cliffs above the ocean, moving through shady stands of cypress and eucalyptus and emerging on to spectacular views of the shore, headlands, and Golden Gate. This is where we got engaged! It is also featured in one of our favorite movies Harold and Maude.
Nepenthe is a restaurant in Big Sur first constructed in 1925. It is known for the miles-long panoramic view of the south coast from the outdoor terrace. Whether you go to eat or just to go check out the view at the historic spot you won't regret it.
This rocky seashore hosts a living community of marine life that is of great interest to visitor and naturalist alike. A variety of algae, crabs, sponges, seastars, mollusks, and fish make their homes in the inter-tidal; that area between low and high tide. The Reserve is set aside to protect this complex but fragile community for us and future generations.
