In the summer of 2018, Chris went to Durham, NC to visit a friend from residency (hi John Bonnewell 👋🏼) for a good ole fashioned bros weekend. Meanwhile, Kayla’s friend (and now bridesmaid) Emma was at Duke for a summer internship. A weekend with no plans, Kayla and her friend Brennan, decided to drive from IN to NC to visit Emma. From casual bars to breweries, there was only one place to be on a Friday night according to google - a local night club called Shooters. We’ll save you a google search and just say: mechanical bull, sticky floors, and a huge dance floor. Early in the night, Chris spotted Kayla playing beer pong against Emma & Brennan. A tequila shot of courage later, he asked if she needed a partner. Despite playing the worst beer pong game of his life, Chris and Kayla hit it off and spent the rest of the night (and weekend) talking over beers. The weekend ended - with Chris going back to Rhode Island and Kayla to Indiana. After a month of staying in touch, Kayla flew out to visit Chris and the rest is history.
Chris and Kayla planned a cozy New England winter weekend in Newport, RI. Kayla thought it was just any other day date, ice skating and espresso martinis at Gurney’s on Goat Island, where the lighthouse was adorned in Christmas lights and bright red bows. Little did she know, Chris had a master plan in place. He proposed in front of the lighthouse with a photographer hiding to capture the moment. When Kayla first visited Rhode Island, the summer of 2018, this lighthouse was their first “official” date and where they snapped their very first photo together.
