One weekend in October 2017, Shelby went to visit her college friends, Erin and Jess, in Boston for the Virginia Tech/Boston College football game. After a night out at the Black Rose, they all decided to go back to Erin's boyfriend's fraternity house in Back Bay to continue the party. A game of slap cup commenced and some other fraternity brothers joined in, but Shelby noticed one guy in particular that she thought was super cute. This cute guy then stood next to her during the next round of slap cup, and this cute guy introduced himself as Max. They spent the rest of the night chatting and hanging out on the fraternity house roof top. The next day, Max was invited to spend the day tailgating with Shelby and her friends. For some crazy reason, he actually said yes and Shelby was excited to spend more time getting to know him. After a great day of tailgating (which included more slap cup), Max even went to the football game (and now he definitely can't say he didn't know how crazy Shelby was about Hokie football since he knew from the very beginning.) At the end of the weekend, Max finally asked for Shelby's number and so started their relationship...

One evening during the week, Shelby had mentioned going to dinner at Buttermilk & Bourbon in Back Bay for dinner that following weekend. A date night was due, and it was supposed to be a nice Spring weekend in Boston. Reservations made, Shelby and Max headed out to dinner that Saturday evening. If you have ever been to Buttermilk & Bourbon, then you know it's some good, filling southern food. Both full, Max mentioned walking down Commonwealth Ave and walking off some of the food. The lights were still up on the trees, so it made for a nice walk. What Shelby didn't put together was that walk would include walking in front of the infamous fraternity house... Once in front of that old fraternity house, Max asked Shelby to pull off her mask (thanks, Boston Covid guidelines) and he got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring. Shelby was in complete shock as she was expecting that it would happen on their Hawaii trip in a few weeks. And of course she said yes. The answer came as no surprise to Max as he knew for a long time what she would say.
