It was a month into our Sophomore year at McKinney High School. I first saw Blake driving a bright orange Camaro while I was on a bus, a few months away from my own license. Catching glimpses of him in the hallway, asking my friends who he was, and finding out he snuck a spot behind me in class. I was already crushing on him. We only managed a few short and awkward conversations in class until our friend Megan spilled the beans to Blake about how I felt.
I was a teenage boy so it was mainly lust. Our friends basically held a gun to our heads to go out, because they believed we would make a cute couple. I asked Hannah out to a football game Friday night and we had our first kiss there with our friends cheering in the background, embarrassing then, but a cherished memory now. A week later I’m dropping her off at home and we kiss, I told her I’d see her tomorrow and she said, “Ok! I love you.” Before I could process those words she shouts, “Don’t say anything back!”, and slams the door shut in my face. She tells me now that she slid down the door to the ground in horror, wondering what my response would have been to her word mix up. We shared those same three words just a few days later, 15 years ago.
Not many people would believe that a High School couple could last. As kids we had disdain for friends or family for saying we would meet other people, or things just wouldn’t work out. Between growing as individuals and becoming distant, work schedules and different schools, new people and changing interests, almost everything is stacked against a young relationship. We have been through the struggles of school, living arrangements, building careers, friends coming and going, family passings, all unwavering because of our absolute dedication to each other. Our love has only grown deeper, we’re eachother’s world, and we’ll always be together. This marriage will not be a test of our relationship, but a celebration for the success it has, and will always be.
