How We Met

The First Day...

Tanner and Meg both graduated from high school in June 2013 (Meg from Palmyra and Tanner from Garden Spot) and planned to attend Lebanon Valley College (LVC) in August 2013. Tanner majored in Physical Therapy and played football, and Meg majored in Psychology. One perk of moving into LVC as a freshman is that the football team, who moves in 2 weeks early for preseason, helps other freshmen carry all of their belongings to their room. Tanner happened to be assigned to Meg's dorm - Silver Hall. Meg was not interested in meeting football players, as she was coming to LVC with a boyfriend from high school, but after Tanner carried Meg's mini-fridge to her room on the 3rd floor and saw her, Meg's mom knew something was up. Meg's mom brought candy to thank the football players for their help, so even though Meg asked her parents not to talk to the boys, Meg's mom befriended Tanner and his teammates. Tanner was immediately interested in "the girl in 301," telling his friend Travis that he was going to marry her someday. TEN SHORT YEARS LATER, here we are!

LVC

August 2013 - May 2017

We became friends almost immediately. Meg's roommate Kiersten became friends with Tanner's friend Travis, and the 4 of us spent a lot of time together in the cafeteria, sledding, and occasionally doing school work. All the while, Meg had a boyfriend. One day in fall 2013 or spring 2014, the 4 of us were in Tanner's room in Vickroy, and Meg noticed a coloring book open on Tanner's desk. She made a snarky comment about how his science classes must be tough assigning homework like that, but Tanner explained he had a 12-year-old brother with Down Syndrome, and he sent him drawings home in the mail. This immediately melted Meg's heart, and her roommate Kiersten couldn't help but giggle because Meg's feelings for Tanner became pretty obvious at this point. With time, Meg ended her high school relationship, but simultaneously, Tanner planned to study abroad in New Zealand. Timing was not in our favor at this point. Tanner flew half way around the world, and Meg carried on with classes and activities at LVC. Tanner came home in the summer of 2015, and Meg was eager to reconnect. That summer, Meg met Tanner's parents and siblings, and Tanner met Meg's parents and sister. We went to HersheyPark and swam in Tanner's home pool. This time, Meg was ready for a relationship, but Tanner honestly explained he was not ready for something serious at 20 years old heading in to our junior year at LVC. Meg, although disappointed, appreciated Tanner's honesty and clarity. Both Tanner and Meg dated other people through junior and senior year at LVC; timing again just wasn't right. Meg remembers seeing Tanner in passing in spring 2017 just before graduation and then leaving the conversation thinking that might be the last time she ever gets to see or talk to him...

Reconnecting

2019

After undergraduate graduation in May 2017, Tanner stayed at LVC for 2 more years to finish his Doctorate in Physical Therapy and Meg moved to Bethlehem, PA to pursue her Ph.D. in School Psychology at Lehigh University. Tanner and Meg did not talk for about 2 years, during which time both became single again. Meg's friends actively encouraged her to make dating profiles on dating sites, but she was not thrilled about this. One day in January 2019, Meg was driving to Lehigh considering pros and cons of using a dating app. In this exact moment, she got a snapchat from Tanner. Tanner jokes that it was a "mass snap" of his dog, Diesel, and Meg happened to be the first to respond, but Meg saw it as fate. She immediately dropped the idea of dating websites and somehow just knew Tanner was her man. From January through March 2019, Meg and Tanner texted occasionally, but it wasn't until March Tanner finally asked Meg to go get sushi. We met at Wasabi in Hershey, where in fact, Meg ate sushi for the first time in her life (and loved it!). We talked like no time had passed and it truly just felt right. Timing was FINALLY on our side! Or was it... Spring turned into summer and we never officially defined our relationship. We went on a few hikes and spent time at each other's houses, but we weren't officially official. Meg's cousin Kaitlin was getting married in June 2019; Meg asked Tanner to be her plus one, and he agreed! Meg introduced Tanner to all of her extended family as her "friend," but we both knew that was not the right title. Shortly after the Bond wedding, Meg brought up the elephant in the room and asked what we were. Finally on June 13, 2019 we were officially dating! Since then, life together has just made sense. Timing would not have worked out when we were 18 or 20... The reconnection in 2019 was the timing that was meant to be and all of the patience it took to get there was worth it. We survived pandemic living, adopted a dog (Jet - a German Shepherd mix), kept on loving our cat (Reef), and bought a house in Harrisburg. We enjoy hikes, cooking, and cozy nights together at our fire pit.

The Proposal

On November 5, 2022, Meg and Tanner had plans to go watch Meg's cousin Devon run in the PA State Cross Country Meet in Hershey. It was a weird 70 degree day in November, so Meg was all about hanging out and spending time with her family. No one jumped on the invite to hang out, so instead, Meg suggested we stop at Hobby Lobby on our way home to look at Christmas decorations. Tanner agreed, and we walked the aisles of Hobby Lobby. When we got home, Tanner suggested a hike and Meg agreed, but was not overly motivated to go right then. Tanner asked Jet if he wanted to go on a hike, which meant we had to get up and go that minute because Jet is not very patient. Tanner and Meg went to Big Boyd Tree Preserve, about 10 minutes from our house, where Tanner proposed! Meg did not see anything coming - turns out Tanner picked up the ring that morning on a motorcycle ride, and Meg's mom and sister knew about the plan which is why they declined hanging out. Tanner had arranged for them to be back at our house with champagne and snacks when we got home from the hike. When we were all together at our house, Tanner and Meg's mom shared the beautiful story of how Tanner took her to the cemetery where Meg's dad is buried to ask both of them together for their permission to marry Meg. Now, the countdown is on until Tanner and Meg are Drs. Reed!
