How We Met

2006

Who knew that this love story would begin walking the halls of Suitland High School? Jasmine caught the eye of Andrew, but he was too shy to speak up. They had a few mutual friends and even had a couple of classes together, but he never made the move until the opportunity finally presented itself. Jasmine was at her friend’s locker and Andrew came over, leaned on the locker and asked: “So when can I get your number?” Jasmine initially thought it was funny because no one has ever approached her like that before, but she was intrigued. She didn’t give him her number, but she wanted to be MySpace friends first. They would talk on and off for a few months and then lost contact. Fast forward a year later, they reconnected during graduation practice. Andrew was sitting in front of Jasmine cracking jokes on his friends. He noticed that she was laughing, so he kept the jokes coming to keep a smile on her face. They found each again on MySpace and exchanged numbers during the summer.

The First Date

7.17.2007

It was during the summer after high school graduation. Jasmine and Andrew had been talking for a few weeks getting to know each other and they were excited to hang out together. Andrew’s friend played chaperone for the night. Andrew came to Jasmine’s doorstep, rang the doorbell, and was greeted by her father. He was slightly intimidated but made sure to give a great impression since he was taking his daughter out. The first date happened at Eat First Restaurant in Gallery Place. It held a special place in Andrew’s heart as it was a place that he went to frequently with family. Dinner included laughs and regular conversation on what had been going on in the few weeks after graduation. The night also included going to the movies to see 1408. Thrillers weren't really Jasmine's style, but she enjoyed the movie. After the movie, they decided to walk around to do a little bit of sightseeing before Andrew's friend met back up with them. Before the night was over, Andrew asked Jasmine if she wanted to be his girlfriend. Jasmine was a little hesitant at first since she was preparing to go to college out of state, so she told him she would think about it. Andrew made sure to get Jasmine back home at a respectable time and texted her when he got home safely. After a few days of texting, Jasmine told Andrew that she would be his girlfriend and have been inseparable every since.

The Proposal

7.4.2019

The weekend started with a road trip to New York. Jasmine was initially under the impression that the trip was for her 30th birthday, which was on the 2nd, and to watch the fireworks since the 4th was their favorite holiday. Her nails were newly polished and Andrew even splurged on getting them new outfits. They made their way through the city and settled in for a little while before meeting up with Andrew's godbrother. Dinner and laughter were at Eataly in the Flatiron District before they made their journey to find a good spot for fireworks. It's the middle of the summer and it was hot! Being typical tourists, they didn't quite anticipate the crowds that were out for the festivities. Every checkpoint for the Brooklyn Bridge that they got to had long lines and was soon at capacity. After about an hour of walking around, they decided to brave the crowds close to the bridge. Anticipation is growing waiting for the show to start. Andrew slipped away a couple of times to speak to the NYPD officer patrolling the gates to see if they could all get closer to view the fireworks. He said he was "waiting for his supervisor to give him permission". Maybe 30 minutes went by and Jasmine, Andrew, and Manny were all let into the gate. Jasmine and Andrew were wearing Washington Nationals shirts so you can almost imagine the dirty looks they got when they were allowed to cross the gate....then Andrew disappears again. Another 15 minutes go by and the show starts....no Andrew to be found, so Jasmine is slightly bummed that he's missing the first part of the show. Andrew finally comes back, grabs Jasmine by the hand, and says "Let's Talk" and they walk further away from the crowd. "You know we've been together for a while....almost 12 years and I love you with all of my heart. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you, so I have to ask you....Will You Marry Me?" Jasmine looks down and Andrew is on his knee. She couldn't believe it and is in tears. She could barely say YES!
