John and I met back in May of 2013 at *wait for it* the Sedgwick County Zoo Gift Shop where we both worked! Super romantic, right? John was a "team lead" and I remember thinking from the beginning that he was SO attractive. Sometimes I would have to work at the inflatable tent right outside the exit of the gift shop and John would always come visit me multiple times a day just to chat. Eventually we set up a tennis match with some of our coworkers to hang out, next came mini golf, then some dinner dates and the rest is history! It may have taken a year's worth of awkward flirting between the two of us to finally get on a date, but good things come to those who wait!
I have to give it to John, he really planned out our proposal down to every last detail (along with the help of both our families - mainly my sister-in-law Sarah)! It was the week of spring break and I was thinking SURELY John was going to propose soon. I had one stipulation for the proposal - that it happened before John's sister Katie was due to have her first baby in the beginning of April so that I could call myself sweet little Remington's aunt. Any time we had anything remotely out of the ordinary planned I expected it to happen. Let's just say I was wrong more than a couple times. The last weekend of spring break my Aunt Amy and her two girls came in town to visit. My mom kept saying that she wanted all of us kids to go to the zoo together so we agreed and made a plan to go on St. Patrick's day and then have a Mexican themed family dinner afterwards at my house. I asked John to come with the family, but he said he had to work. So off to the zoo we went. My brother Connor and sister-in-law Sarah were supposed to join us, but Connor "got sick" right before so they stayed home. Little did I know that at that time, Sarah was over at my house with John and his sisters decorating for a surprise engagement party! We walked through the zoo and eventually came to the elephant exhibit where I caught a glimpse of John. That's when I knew it was the real deal! I was extremely surprised and nervous about being in front of so many people so I whispered to my mom as we walked forward "I'm so nervous." However, she heard "I don't want this" and about had a heart attack and tried to abort the whole mission before I set her straight. Then John got down on one knee and did the deed and I said yes of course. Afterwards we went back to my house where SO many more family members were at my house than I expected and we had an amazing celebration! It was perfect!
