How We Met

They technically met in their third year of college. Shirley had just started dorming, while Tyler was already a seasoned third-year dorm resident. They crossed paths a few times in the college café, completely unaware that those small, passing moments would one day mean something. Years later, they ended up in the same college club — A club that was mostly catered to the Filipino culture, and then there was Shirley, the Chinese girl who still isn’t quite sure how she ended up there. During introductions, when it was her turn to speak, the only thing she offered was: “Hi my name is Shirley and I like wearing sweatpants.” For some reason, that stuck with Tyler. Now, he knew her name. And that she liked sweatpants. At a house party later that week, Tyler’s best friend insisted Shirley meet 'someone'. Shirley had no idea who this friend was that just approached her in a panic — or Tyler, for that matter. But she shrugged her shoulders and went along. As a result, there was an awkward hello… and an equally awkward goodbye when his best friend had them meet with no context. But the night wasn’t over. Tyler confidently approached Shirley once more at the party, sat on her armrest, and asked "So, what's your major?". Those words Shirley will never forget. At the end of the party, they all carpooled home. Shirley thought Tyler was a handsome guy and asked one of the girls in their group to switch seats so she could sit in the back next to him. (That same friend ended up in the front seat with the driver — and fun fact: those two are now married!). Needless to say, they quickly discovered how much they enjoyed talking about music, food, and their shared hobbies in that car ride. From there, what started as chance encounters slowly turned into something steady and sure. They spent years growing up together through their twenties — navigating adulthood, challenges, change, and everything in between. It wasn’t always easy, but they always chose each other. Even when Shirley joked she’d never make it to a ring, Tyler always knew she was the one. He thoughtfully proposed in a cozy cabin in the Catskills, snowed in with their sweet pup, Mochi — the little family they created together. It was quiet, intimate, and perfectly them. Shirley said yes! A few months later, they moved into their new home, began wedding planning, and now here we are. What started as crossed paths and sweatpants has become a deep, enduring love — one built over years of laughter, growth, and unwavering partnership. This is just the beginning of their forever.
