November 17, 2018, began as a normal Saturday for both Katie and Oscar. Katie had no plans and wanted to spend her day relaxing at home. Oscar, on the other hand, was waiting for his soccer buddies to arrive. With his radius extended to 100 miles, Oscar was browsing through Bumble, a dating app, when he stumbled upon Katie’s profile, which he swiped right on. Whilst Katie was taking her time to start her Saturday morning, she received a notification on her Bumble app that someone swiped on her, which she swiped back. At the beginning of the talking stage of the relationship, Katie and Oscar took things slow. Because Oscar had not been in a relationship in 4 years, he decided to be intentional. He assured Katie that he was not looking for anything serious right off the bat and if things work out, then they will. Katie, feeling reassured, felt comfortable that Oscar was not placing any pressure on her. Over several months of text messages, phone calls, and FaceTime calls, they finally agreed to meet in person. That day finally came, and Oscar met Katie’s lovely parents. They briefly exchanged pleasantries, then Katie and Oscar were off. They started the "hangout" with a round of mini golf, which Katie won with no competition. Afterwards, they went to Korean BBQ. Because the night was still young, Oscar decided to take Katie to watch Into the Spiderverse. At the end of the day, Katie knew Oscar was the one whom she wanted to marry. Because Oscar was going on trips that year, he decided he could not wait to ask Katie to be in a relationship. On March 2nd, 2019, Oscar asked Katie to be his girlfriend; of course, she said yes. Early in their relationship, it was never short of an adventure. Oscar traveled to Benin, Togo, Hungary, Italy, Greece, England, and Taiwan; Katie traveled to Hawaii, Netherlands, and Belgium. Together, they would later travel to Colorado, San Francisco, Hawaii, Oregon, Japan, and Disneyland countless times. But, like all relationships, theirs faced difficult challenges along the way. Together, they experienced the Pandemic, Occupational Therapy school, job searches, and loss of family members. Katie and Oscar each went through their own trials, but with the support of the other, all was bearable. They truly felt like it was them against the world. The next few years were filled with laughter, memories, and many family gatherings which soon led to the “When are you getting married?” questions from everyone. Feeling the pressure, Oscar knew he had to act fast, but pressure makes diamonds. Oscar had various ideas how he wanted to propose, but he knew that he wanted something simple but memorable. He focused on the idea of the background of the proposal as the most important part of it all. Oscar originally planned a trip to Japan with his childhood friends to celebrate his 30th birthday, but as the plan changed, he later realized he should propose there. Through months of planning with friends in the U.S. and Japan, he finally came up with the plan of a simple proposal with Mt. Fuji in the background. Oscar originally planned to propose on January 6th, his 30th birthday, but it rained all day throughout Japan. Knowing Katie deserves a proper proposal, he postponed the journey to Mt. Fuji later in the week. On January 8, 2025, Oscar and Katie headed to Yamanashi where Oscar would find a secluded spot to propose. Once he found a spot where no one was around, Oscar pretended to set a timer on his camera for a photo but was secretly recording. When Oscar took out the ring from his jacket and got down on one knee, Katie was gobsmacked of it all. She had no idea he had the ring and would propose. With wind blowing her hair and tears of confusion and joy, she said yes. Filled with excitement to celebrate with family and friends on a day that will highlight the strength of their relationship, Katie and Oscar are ready for their journey together and to continue onto the next chapter of the OK Life.
