Well worth the hype (and price). You could spend all day here if you wanted to! Theo recommends the monkeys, Madeline recommends the meerkats.
Our favorite flea market and weekend morning activity. If you forget to get us a wedding gift you can find one here. Haggling is not only common, but expected.
Theo likes to go here on his birthday. What makes this beach special (in a city lined with beaches) is it's tall vertical cliffs which situate you away from all things man made. It is a stunning view, and the fresh salty air will blow you away.
We both grew up going to this iconic spot, which is equidistant from Madeline and Theo's childhood homes. Madeline recommends the Whitestone, Theo recommends the Primavera or classic mushroom.
Charming and delicious spot to pick up tortas and smoothies. Everything is good, you can't order wrong.
Our favorite spot for fish tacos. It is cheap and you get a free cup of consommé. Outside standing tables only.
If you have a car, go to Kearny Mesa for any kind of asian drink or snack. Tapioca Express has fried chicken (or tofu) that Madeline and Theo always crave. After Tapex, head across the street to Happy Lemon for the best boba.
There is a lot to see in Balboa Park. A simple walk in the trails by Morley Field provides nice views of the city and its canyons. The botanical garden is a good free option while the Japanese Friendship Garden is also beautiful. There are also about a dozen museums in the park. In high school we would picnic next to Marston House, a historic craftsman cottage.
A childhood favorite for both Theo and Madeline, come for a wide variety of snacks and foods. Open every Sunday from 9 to 2 pm.
Pancho Villa market has the best tortillas in San Diego. They make them fresh right in front of you, and stick them straight into a bag while they're piping hot. You must get the flour tortillas, not corn. Eat a few in the parking lot and bring home a couple bags, too.
Theo's favorite place to get coffee and meet a friend. Go to the North Park location on El Cajon Boulevard so you can stop by Lang Books, which is two doors down.
