How It Started

I wrote him a letter...

It’s amazing how small moments can come together to shape a bigger picture. Chase and I both served missions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we crossed paths briefly at the Missionary Training Center (MTC), our story truly began years later. In 2020, the pandemic flipped the world upside down, especially for missionaries. My mission was to Barcelona, Spain, but due to the pandemic’s uncertainties, I was reassigned to Kennewick, Washington. The MTC was held virtually, and I decided to take an extra class, “Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel.” In one of the breakout rooms, I was randomly paired with Chase (Elder Oakey). We started chatting and discovered we had a lot in common—he was serving in Milan, Italy, and I had been called to Spain but was now in Washington. We also found out his cousin was serving in Kennewick, and I promised to look out for her, though I wasn’t sure how likely it was to meet her. To my surprise, I met his cousin, Hermana Platt, almost immediately when I arrived in Kennewick. We became close friends, and our paths often crossed. Meanwhile, Chase and I stayed in touch occasionally, but we were both focused on our missions. After I returned home, seven months passed, and I was moving on with my life. One day, I posted something on my Facebook story, and a message popped up from a familiar name: Chase Oakey. I remembered him from the MTC, and we began catching up. He mentioned that he had found the letter I wrote him during our missions, but he never sent it. I joked about him hand-delivering it instead. That comment sparked the courage for him to ask me out, and eventually, we started dating. On our first date, Chase forgot the letter. On the second date, he forgot it again. But eventually, he handed it to me, and we laughed about the whole thing. As we got to know each other, he admitted that when we first met, he thought I was out of his league and never imagined we’d end up together. Life, however, had other plans. And so, our story continues, full of moments, memories, and unexpected turns. We’re excited for what’s next in our journey together.
